Here is my sump setup

My overflow goes down the two pipes to the left and then into my DIY filter media basket to catch the big pieces of waste. From there I added a piece of acrylic to make a refugium. I added a cheap grow light to the side of the sump for the fuge. Then the water goes to the skimmer section and then into the return pump section. I also have my emergency overflow going into my return section. I just bought an auto doser that I'm going to add to the sump to dose my ALK and CAL. I also added a LED strip down there so if I need to see it at night I can just turn it on. I also went with a wifi power strip that I have my return pump and skimmer and grow light connected to. I use Google Assistant to "run feed mode" and it cuts off my return and skimmer. Then after about 15 mins I tell Google to turn on my return and then about a min later I tell it to turn on my skimmer. The power strip has a timer function through it's app so I have my fuge light programmed to come on and turn off automatically. I'm also about to buy some Marine pure cubes to put down in the sump for added surface for bacteria and for copepods to live in.

Here is the wifi power strip. Another member suggested it in another post.

Here is the grow light. It's a beast. I also liked that it is waterproof.

Other people might have more stuff that they have down in their sump like a algae scrubber and/or media reactors.

This sounds like rocket science for me to build did you struggle in making it ?
Your set up is really nice tho
No it was not a struggle. When I got this tank it came with a stand and the sump with the return pump. I trashed the stand and built my own stand. So I did some research and I knew I wanted a refugium section. So I had to figure a way to do that.
Take a look at my build thread.

You can always get a sump that has all of the sections that you will need already made into it. I was actually going to sell this sump and use a kit to turn a 29gal tank into a sump. Just look on eBay for Sump kit...or I found this company

And as far as what do you put in a sump. It can be very basic like mine. Or more extravagant like some others.

And keep on asking questions. There is a wealth of knowledge here. That's what I did. I'm fairly new to the hobby. I got my first tank in May and just recently transitioned over to my current tank about a month ago.
