So it's becoming clear that my Phosphates and Nitrates will never get under control without some sort of nutrient export. So I am thinking of adding a HOB refugium to my 36g bow front. I like this one because the pump is not in the tank. Anyone ever tried this one? https://www.marinedepot.com/aquamaxx-hob-r-hang-on-back-refugium My question is do I keep mechanical filtration? And add this? Or get rid of my Aquaclear?

I'm a fan of some sort of mechanical filtration, do you have any other means of filtering other than the Aquaclear? You could certainly use both but I'm not sure what amount of room you're working with. If I were in your situation and had the room to continue running the Aquaclear that's the route I'd go.

I do like the Aquamaxx HOB refugium. I've never used that exact one but I did run one years ago and was very happy with it. Brick sized mounds of cheato would get puled out of it when I would clean it. Honestly I've never understood why these aren't more popular because they really don't take up much room at all.

you can do both and then remove one later on. you want to strip some phosphate and nitrate but remember not to remove so much that they are both reading 0 on your test kit.

also, have you considered a chaeto reactor?
I have not considered that. How is that different from a refugium?

No. I only have an Aquaclear 110 but I would need to downgrade to probably the 70 so they would both fit

So this might be a dumb question... but when I put the refugium on, do I add salt water or RODI to make up the volume?
