I know they're irresponsible to keep because they will starve to death, but is there anyone who has successfully kept one? I saw one today in a tiny local pet store kept in a rack of 6 x 6 cubes (the kind they usually keep inverts and tiny fish for sale in at LFS) and it was up against the wall of the cube scuttling madly as if it would be able to push through it. There was no sand in the bottom of the cube so I imagine it has had no shelter and no food since it came into the store.

Is there anything that can be done for it? If I took it home I imagine it'd slowly starve to death any way...

How unfortunate.

Leave it there. They'll either care for it properly or it will perish. (Or some other unsuspecting person will buy it...)

If they don't sell, they don't get restocked. Supply/demand 101.

It seems like a lot of pet stores are selling them. I had a guy at my lfs recommend me get one to sift the sand in my 30 gal... People will do anything to make a sale.
