how many hours does everybody run there lighting for? I'm new to the hobby and I'm growing a bit of hair algae

it really depends on the size of your tank, type of lighting and if you have a chiller or a way to keep it cool. I run my lights almost 16 hours a day but the main bright lights only about 8 hours a day. if your having algae problems i would reccomend a bigger clean up crew, and a yellow tang for hair algae. also if your using MH lighting as they get older the spectrum changes and will make crazy algae in your tank!!

In the past, I have run a combination of T-5 and Metal Halides. I typically run:

T-5: 10 Hours
Metal Halides: 6 hours

This gives a 2 hour morning and evening "dusk/ dawn effect in the tank".

This article explains a lot about different corals, and how photosynthesis effects coral.

A photo cycle takes about 3 hours.
