How are you keeping your calcium up?

Just wanting to see how everybody imports calcium in thier Nano. I have had some low calcium problems as of late and switched my dosing and seem to have gotten it back up. What are you doing? I saw a nano calcium reactor the other day but am scared to use one because these nano's are so unstable. What do you think?

2 part is the easiest way in small volume without a nice big sump

when my sps 20l was set up in maryland, i used kalk but that soon messed up everything (alk,mg) and resulted in dead sps and crappy looking tank.. maybe because i didn't know what i was doing at the time. i did know, but didn't actually know.

now with my 18g tank, i have a large sump (29g about 1/2 filled). currently, i'm dosing 12ml each of part a/b daily and weekly additions of dry alk and dry calc.

i'm getting tired of dosing 2 part and had trouble the last time i was away for a week. i'm going to try calc reactor (shuran pico). i'll be getting the co2 cylinder tomorow, hopefully. i'm hoping to have it dialed in by the time i leave in oct for the next week away from the tank. this time i know more and have better tools to regulate (pH controller). this may seem like overkill, but i'm planning on moving to a 40B sooner than later (just a few more plumbing parts).

Let me know how the reactor works for you. I have an SPS dominated thirty cube with a 12 g sump and 2.5g fuge. The dosing is getting old. I have been scared to try a reactor on my Nano in fear of it being too much but after seeing these small reactors I have been rethinking it.

at macna, taam had a small reactor. the vendor said he was running it on a 55 gal. used the co2 tank for paintball guns, easy to refill at wally world, and a cheap co2 regulator, didn't ask for source. running one bubble a sec would easily maintain the tank. didn't have to check the pH too much, but still need a pH meter.

the big problem for us is if the reactor will change to pH too much in our smaller tanks, although 44 seems big too me. i'm also very interested as to what will happen. hopefully, more stability opposed to wider fluctuations.

Yep, If I decide to do it I will be getting an aquacontroller or reefkeeper. For now I am going to keep manually dosing.

I use the liquid Elos prima line of Ca and dose as needed. Usually right now I just dose once a week since my tank is so new and not much is in it now.

If you have a decent amount of evaporation, a Nilsen would work nicely.

Otherwise, a reactor on a controller would be the next best option. The controller would safegaurd against a ph drop.

Are you refering to a Kalk reactor plumbed into an auto topoff? I evep about a gallon a day. I am exploring that option also

yes. 1 gallon per day is perfect! A kalk reactor would work really nicely.

Your initial expense is there, but then all you have to buy is kalk...and that's cheap. Especially if you load up on Mrs. Wages!

Thanks, I think I will give it a try. I'm guessing MRC has one?

That would be a pretty good guess! :D

You're pretty handy, so you could make a simple version yourself; not sure if it's worth the hassle though. The MRC one has the pump built in and includes the controll device-it'll allow you to set the frequency and duration of the kalk mixing.

i used the mrc nielsen in the setup in maryland. really need to watch levels when setting up. i think my mistake was letting the mg get out of wack. i think it is far safer to dose 2 part unless you have the time to test regularly for a couple months.

do you notice if your evap rates change during the summer and winter months? may change how much kalk will be dosed during the upcoming season change over.

Not to mention that kalk has a natural pH around 11-13 In a small tank, yes it will help maintain your levels, but if you don't have a place of that has a nice flow to drip it in, it may cause problems. I ran a full reef 15g for a good bit, but I had one of those HOB AC500's that I converted into a tiny fuge. I dripped the kalk into there where it pulls in the water. never had any issues. Just make sure you watch your pH.
