How do you get rid of a gurgling overflow?

I have my overflow running into my refugium then another overflow in the refugium flowing into my sump. The refugium overflow is gurgling rather loudly. Is there anyway to quiet the noise? Without killing the flow too much. I changed out my 1/2 bulkhead to a 1 inch bulkhead and this is when the noise started.

Could be a number of things. A picture might help since it doesn't sound like a standard configuration. If you have a Durso, the vent hole might be too small. If you have a hose draining down, if it's not fairly straight down, you could be getting a slowdown which causes a flushing sound as the water draining down has to have enough volume to be heavy enough to push itself down.

If the drain drains below the water line in the next vessel - same thing. Back-pressure prevents it from draining freely so water builds in the pipe/hose until it's heavy enough to outweigh the back pressure.

Always drain above the water line in the lower vessel, always have as straight downward a path as you can, and make sure your drain is vented.

I fixed it. I put in a Durso pipe. Well a diy Durso out of left over pipe fittings I had. It's is soo much betyer. Thanks guys!!!

Yes! Pics will help more people, even myself, I going to do the durso too, and going to use 2 inch pipe for the main drain regulated with a gate valve and 1 inch pipe for the emergency drain, they both gonna go to a skimmer dedicated tank then down to a sump refugium, they both going to be almost straight runs except for the two 45 degrees that have to travel across an intermediate wall, then again straight to skimmer tank and down to the sump I have done some research research about it but this threads help more people as well.

Took a little bit to get my flows regulated but it works in kind of a tidal motion. It takes 6 hours for the tank water level to drop 2 inches while the sump level rises but at the 6 hour mark it starts emptying and tank level goes back up. The when the sump water level hits a certain point it starts filling back up. Please don't ask how I managed to do it that but it's really cool. Lol

And I plan on building a new stand where I can move my sump to my spare 55 gallon and building a false wall in front of my tank to give the appearance of being inside my wall

So I have gurgling now.... I put my finger over the air hole and it gets way worse (as I would expect, but wanted to verify that was the source). Could/should I Drill some more holes in the top of this thing?

Pic coming, I have to reboot the dumb phone first

When I had this type of noise issue I added more airline tubing to the small vent hole. the longer piece of tubing allows you to adjust it. play with the length a little until you get it just perfect. It will allow you to reduce the noise down to nothing. If this doesnt work add another hole and put airline tubing in it and adjust. the right amount of air to water ratio will stop the noise. At least in my experience

Be careful if the airline tubing is in the hole breaking your siphon! It can and will get clogged quickly. If you don't have enough room in your sump for the total volume of water without the siphon break, your asking for trouble.... Sump overflow!

Water is going to spit out where there are holes. I don't recommend adding air line tubing to a siphon break hole, that's trouble waiting to happen.
