My alkalinity in my tank is around 16. What's going to be the safest way to lower it? I read online the best way is to let it go down by itself. I have some water mixing now just in case I need to do a water change.

The best way to lower it is slowly. Small water changes would be okay. SPS are sensitive to large swings in Alk.

Virtually every time someone has something out of whack here, it turns out to be a bad test kit :) What kind of test kit are you using?

great point!

Well I had my banner fish and my Pakistani butterfly die within the last few days. I checked the water parameters and everything was good except the alkalinity. I tested it with the api test kit. Like I said, it was 16!!!! I hate the api test kits but its the only kh test I have.

Do yourself a huge favor and throw that API kit in the garbage.

You can buy a SeaChem, Elos, Hach, etc., or just go to your LFS and ask them to test your water.

Good reliable testing is a 'core' requirement to being in this hobby.

'Cheap reef equipment' is an oxymoron.
