Depends on the shape of the aquarium.

Rectangular tanks use this forumula: g = (l * h * w) * 0.004329

Hex tanks are a bit more complicated. Assuming all panes (p) are equal here is a simple formula: g = (2.598 * (p * p) * h) * 0.004329

cylinders are pretty easy just need to know the diameter (d): g = (pi * (r * r) * h) * 0.004329

Or it's a little easier to remember L x W x H / 231 = gallons

Just get a gallon Milk Jug and keep a tally as you poor them in!!!! :)

Not Really!!!!

I had to figure it out based on a program I am working on. I want to get it as sophisticated as the link above but some of the math is going to require me to dust off an old math book. The trick to most tanks is to cut it into triangles or squares and measure those. You can do L shaped, hexagonal, etc this way. However, bow front is an interesting calculation which I have figure out yet, but I haven't really tried either.
