How long is it safe to transport a fish in a bag from a LFS?

It would be far more convenient to pick up a couple at lunch than fight traffic after work. They'll be small ones as they're destined for my biocube. Looking at a YWG, and maybe a blenny or six line. Depends on what's on hand.

Thanks!

I dont know precisely, but fish get packed and shipped overnight all the time.

If they're packed with pure O2, then a looong time. If just scooped up, thrown in a bag and closed up... a few hours. I've put fish in a bag moving from tank to tank for several hours, just make sure to put a lot of water in with em.

As long as the temp stays stable and is not too hot nor cold then they should be fine for a whole day ready.

Alright. Thanks for the responses. Guess I'll just make sure the store knows they'll be intransport for a good amount of time and make sure they prepare accordingly.

Thanks again.

Just to add - (because one place I went to did this)

If they put the fish bag into another fish bag, then watch if they put the bag in upside down. This one shop did that and I did not look at it. When I got home I found that the water was leaking into the outside bag. Good thing they put alot of water into the fish bag.

Just make sure they put plenty of oxygen in the bag. And yes, double bagging and temp are also key. Good luck!

Most LFS's do this with corals with sharp ends or large fish, fish with sharp spines or scalpel to ensure that the water stays in the bag, it should not affect how long the fish can survive. If you see the first bag has sprung a leak while they are double bagging it, ask them to use two fresh bags to avoid the fish being out of water.

Your new fish should be fine as long as you have temp controlled and get them into your water within 18-24 hours.

I usually keep a styrofoam container in the truck to put fish in. Helps keep the temperature issues at bay, especially if the fish are gonna be bagged for several hours. Should be able to get one at most lfs, unless they've already thrown them away. Or just get a cooler or something from anywhere.

Got home, got them acclimated, and got them in. Kept the A/C blowing on them on the way home in the car and they spent a little time at work too. The Blenny and Goby got into it a little at first when they both went for the same cave. The Blenny has found another spot to hang out.
