My sump and other major tanks workings are in my basement and with the weather being like has been this week it got fairly cold in there and my tank temp droped to 73.7. :shout: Normally I have it between 77.7 and 78.9. During the summer I unplugged my heaters after my temp rose about 81, I just never plugged them back in until this morning. When I checked everything out fish and most of the corals seem to be OK, expect for my Frogspawn, Hammer and BTA. Frogspawn was completly turned in on itself and really small, Hammer looked like it attempted to do the same, and the BTA had its base all puffed up with all the tentacles inside.

I'm at work now and I'm worried when I get home I lost these guys....Do you think they will recover or is it a lost cause and they will die? Please advise.

That bit of a temperature drop probably won't do much long term. I am no expert on frogspwan type LPS, but I doubt you'll have any long term issues.

IMO much better to have a slight temp drop than a temp increase. Let us know how it turns out.

I'd be more worried about heat than getting cool. Any idea how long the temp was below 77? Was 73.7 the coolest temperature?

I would guess that 73.7 was the lowest, that was this morning around 8:30 AM. When I went into the basement to plugin the heaters (only 3 of 5 I didn't want the temp to climb to quickly), it was cool in there but not like the outside. Wife called around 4 PM said the temp was 76.1, but she said the Frogspawn, Hammer and BTA still were closed up. SHe has now plugin the other 2 heaters and I'm hoping everything stablizes out...

I'm heading home now from work. I'll know more when I get there. Hopefully I'm overreacting and the corals are just upset because of the temp drop. I'll post what I find when I get home.

Doomsday!!! Frogspawn is gone...One hammer head is gone. I find it hard believe that a temp drop did all that....So I took all the tests I have and here are the results....I do not see anything out of the ordinary but something is not right.....

Phosphate - .03
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 0
pH - 8.0
calc - 420
salt - 1.026

I am going to do a water change to see if I get my salt level down....I'm right now my sump is full and my salinity is at 1.026 so I'm wondering how high it got....

Please let me know if I missed something.

Some of the fish I have require low temps, but the reef does fine. It may not grow AS fast, but no problems otherwise. I think in a case as this a temperature swing, as opposed to a temperature level may be the issue.

There have been a couple time when I thought I'd lost a hammer, but left it in the tank for a few days and it came back. Just wait and see before taking them out of the tank.

Did a water change late last night and temp was back to 78 this morning. All the other corals seem fine and the other heads of the hammer were expanding nicely.

Jenn,
I don't have a test for Alk.....At least not yet....If that is a cause for concern I will definitely go get one..

Brian,
I think the one head of the hammer is gone....It is just a white bone now. No color left. I will clip it off tonight when I get home from work. I want to make sure it is not some parasite or anything.

It could be... at least testing would rule a problem or potential problem in, or out.

Some corals can be like a barometer for certain problems. Lots of soft corals don't like low alk and they will look sort of sad or shriveled when it's low.

Euphyllias are usually fairly durable - and in a chemical war they usually win, but was there anything close to it or just upstream from it that might have "put a whammy" on it?

Jenn
