How often to replace GFO media?

I realize I can test the water to determine the answer to my question -- however, let's assume "normal" operating conditions (whatever that is) -- should the media generally be replaced weekly, monthly, etc? I know it really depends on feeding habits, bio-load, and so forth. But surely, there is some general guidelines. These darn test kiits that rely on color are rough on us color blind kids!

I purchased the GFO reactor from BRS -- very nice unit -- easy to install and change the media. I have it on my 125 DT (30g sump).

Thanks for any thoughts on the subject. BTW, I did do a search on GFO with no results.

I'd say I replace mind every 3-4-weeks. I have two single BRS media reactors, and I change the GFO every other time I change the carbon....like week one new GFO/GAC.....week two new GAC....week three new GFO/GAC....week four new GAC....and repeat.

thanks guys -- that's what I been doing. that makes me feel better.

Same here.

Here is another thread on the topic with similar/consistent responses: http://www.atlantareefclub.org/forums/showthread.php?t=35525">http://www.atlantareefclub.org/forums/showthread.php?t=35525</a>

I hope you don't mind my asking a follow up question in your thread, but how much carbon and GFO are people running?

I started with 1/2 cup GFO in my 120G, total 220G, system and moved up to 1 cup after a month. In my frag system, total 120G, I started with 1/4 cup and moved up to 1/2 cup. I fill both BRS reactors on each system completely with carbon.
