Starting a FOWLR tank for now and will eventually move to reef but I do really want all my live rock to become covered in that purple coralline.

I haven't been monitoring calcium and magnesium levels and from what I understand coralline likes to grow with a good of supply each.

Should I start monitoring them? I have a couple dosers already. Should I look into dosing kalkwasser and mag?

Any suggestions on Light settings?

Here's an interesting article

You can seed the tank with a small pc of encrusted LR, and I've also heard that scraping and getting some of the coralline in to the water column can help it spread around faster.

Good read. Nice to read some stuff with statistical data! Sounds like i definitely need to increase my lights.

if you don't seed your tank, you MIGHT not get coraline. If you put a rock in there with coraline or add a frag with some coraline, you will definitely get coraline.

Honestly, go buy a small piece of liverock from any LFS and put it in your sump or display. That's all it will take. You will have all sorts of growth in various colors. You dont need crazy lighting or anything else. It just happens.

Within 6 months you will have all sorts of color on your rocks, but it happens so slowly that you probably won't notice until it's there. Simply compare photos from the beginning and you'll see it. I'd bet your rocks are already well on their way.

Add some hermits or snails with coralline on their shells, or get a little seed rock. Yes, crumbling/pulverizing it spreads the stuff like crazy.

Provided you have enough light and appropriate (i.e. practically any) levels of calcium/carbonate/magnesium in the water you'll be swearing at the stuff as it spreads to cover hard-to-scrape parts of your display's sides in no time. ;)

Every new reefer: I wish I had coraline... how do I get some?

- 6 months later -

How do I get rid of coraline?!?!

haha
