I have a 30g hex (tall tank) with the light pretty high off the water. I heat the tank to 78 with a heater, and with a house ambient temp of about ~72 the tank gets to 83* give or take 0.3* or so within 8 hrs of light. I, however, only have a canister filter for water displacement so I do not get the same cooling effect an equal size sump might give.
I have a 250W DE Phoenix 14k.
Here is an old picture to judge the distance of the light off the water.

PS: I would recommend a chiller. My tank gets way to hot for comfort if the room temp increases too much. I monitor my temps all day to make sure they do not exceed 83* for more than an hour or so, but that is something I'm ok with until I can drom a couple hundred on some water cooling.
