Over the past year plus, I have had seemingly healthy small fish disappear overnight or be missing a part of their tail or other fins. Then about 9 months ago I found a moult from a crab and figured that was the culprit even though I've never actually seen it. I tried baiting a couple of wide mouthed jars at night but the cleaner shrimp would always get the bait out as soon as the lights went out.
Last night after the lights were out, before I went upstairs I took a look at the tank with a flashlight as I do just about every night. I saw a flash of movement that was unusual at the top of a huge rock of encrusting pavona. I figured that had to be the crab so with the help of my wife I got the light fixture off the tank and took that rock out. Sure enough I could see into one of the holes in the rock and could just make out a part of the crab. I tried putting the rock in a bucket of RO water but it wouldn't come out. I finally chisled away some of the rock from the bottom and was able to get the sucker. :yay:
Now I need to worry about the beautiful pavona rock, hopefully the RO emersion won't do too much damage to it.
