I am upgrading from my 55gal to a 120 . I have an aptasia issue on most of my LR .when I take my LR from the 55 I plan on pouring salt mix on the rock too nuke the aptasia I have tried this and it works great , my question is should I just do a full cycle and start with a freash clean system or should I use most of my water and only have a mini cycle? I have the means to QT all fish and corals for a full cycle so what would you do . Thanks Folks, curtis

If it was me, id prob do a new cycle only because you have the opportunity to.
If you add too much new water, your going to create a mini cycle anyways...but beccamc's approach would work as well too.

but what I an afraid of is the aptasia either releasing spours into the water , then nuking the ones on the rock would be a waste or small peices ripping off and floating around. I might be over thinking it ?

peppermint shrimp would be a good addition to the new tank!! mine wiped out all my aptasia out in a big hurry

After a day or so freshwater dip the other rock and add it. My tank did a 2 day mini cycle and was fine after than. Just my input.
I take dry salt and pour it on they melt like butter rinse in freash . of course this is not while the rock is in the tank.

If you're breaking everything down anyway, just take your time and do it right. Nuke your rock to be certain the aiptasia is gone. Start fresh and not have the headache of an infestation to deal with in the 120.

Also, the water has no affect on the cycle. The bacteria lives on the rock and in the sand. Keeping some or all of your old water will do nothing for you.

Start the 120 with new sand, new water and nuked rock. Seed it with sand from an extablished, pest free tank. Sure you'll have to wait longer, but you'll have a pest free canvas..and what doesn't involve a wait in this hobby anyway?

And if you go to the trouble to start fresh without pest make sure you quarantine everything you place in the tank which includes all corals, frag or colony! If not your efforts are a waste of time.

I got a little lazy and inpatiant, when I added some LR a few months ago . for sure it wont happen agian if I can help it . I wont be able to get around the 120 like I can the 55 so I want the best use of every thing. I can move all corals & cuc to a smaller tank and leave the fish in the 55 and cycle the 120. what do ya think?

He'll YES!

I am going to just start freash and do it right . I dont want the headaches from being lazy and impatiant. Thanks folks for all your input it's nice to have a sounding board

nuked all the LR that didnt have corals on it I have the corals in thier own tank so I will grab a few peppermints and see if I can clean the aptasia up . if not the I will grab some aptasia x and go to town before putting them in the new tank .
