I have 2 red cap montipora and have something growing on them. It started about a month ago when I was on vacation and the lights went out for 3 days. I believe it's some type of sponge but an not sure. It started out white but has been getting darker. They continue to grow and have better color than ever. It's on a 60 gallon with t5's and parameters have been great and steady.

Looks like white band disease to me. It's dying from the middle out. The dark stuff is skeleton, the white stuff is dying tissue.

I doubt it's because the lights were out - it's an infection. You can try a coral dip but I think it's too far gone. Sorry.

Thanks for the response. I will try dipping. I thought it was some type of sponge because the affected area had become smaller. I would observe the outer part of the area become stringy and then start disappearing.

If you can stop it, new tissue may encrust over the dead skeleton, but the dead stuff won't 'come back'.
