Is it reef safe? Do I need to get it off the hammer? It hasn't been doing very well.
 
Sponges won't cause issues. How's your water testing?

Agree it's a chicken liver sponge.

I'd say that coral is close to dead though. The sponge is not the likely cause. Looks more like a Torch coral not a Hammer (both are Euphyllia sp.)

What's going on in the tank? Parameters, etc?
