There is a sponge growing around the base of this Caulastrea. It seems to grow quickly and is encroaching on the heads of the Caulastrea. So far, the coral does not appear to be in danger of being overtaken but it grows quickly so that may happen in the coming months. My bigger fear is it spawns and starts growing out of control everywhere.

Anyone see this before? Should I "fear the sponge?"

That's kinda cool. I've never had a coral overtaken by sponge, so I don't think it's of great concern, but I'd certainly keep an eye on it.

It looks pretty cool. Is the coral receding at all? If not, I'd let it be.

It doesn't look like the coral is receding at all. The area where the sponge is touching the coral does not look irritated at all.
