then here's your chance. Harbor Freight is having some major sales going on so keep an eye on their website. As an HF Insider, I get advanced notices of their sales.

Coming up...... a 900 peak/800 running watts, 2HP generator is marked down from $180 to $89!!! This deal is good from March 7-9 and in-store only!

Also....same dates as above....8750 peak/7000 running watts, 13HP generator...reg $700, now $550. If you miss those dates, then from March 18 - 31, this same generator will be $569.

From now until March 31....4400 peak/3200 running watts, 6.5HP generator...reg $500, now $300 (I have the coupon for this otherwise it's $340).
6500 peak/5500 running watts, 13hp generator....reg $600, now $480

They also have several different size inverters on sale until the end of March.

Don't get caught!!

Now I need to calculate how many watts my tank needs to run.. Hummm, this should be interesting.

Thanks. I was actually looking to get one. Before the snow storm I bought the only one I could find and it was far from cheap or ideal. My power never went out so I returned it a couple days later. I'll probably snag the largest one they've got. I would always rather have too much than not enough.

No problem guys. And I have a discount coupon worth 20% if somebody wants the discount number (for ordering online). It is not valid with any other discounts or on compressors and generators.

Do most people get the generator and then an inverter to smooth out the signal or just get an inverter generator?

Two different things altogether. A generator uses a gasoline driven engine to create electrical power. an Inverter takes DC and converts it to AC.

How are the HF generators quality wise? I've heard mixed reviews on them.

I don't see how they could be any different than any other. They use the same engines and that's really the fail point. When I read bad reviews on generators, it's almost always because of poor maintenance on the owner's part. If you don't use it the proper way and keep the fuel correct...they will have issues. I start mine once a month regardless. Use Stabil in the fuel and it will be good. Most people don't inspect the fuel lines either or shut off the gas line valve after use. This leads to gunked up carbs that won't start.

I'm aware of the difference between the two. For our application though I was wondering if the inverter was necessary to get "cleaner" power. Generators aren't known for providing steady anything for the most part. So I was wondering, to support a reef tank, if most people get the generator with the inverter built in or if it's preferable, for quality, to get the inverter separate from the generator.

As for the one in town he meant Douglasville which is close to Greg.

I own, and used for the first time, the 800w/900w peak 2hp generator (the improved red one) during this last ice storm for ~36hrs. Worked great and worth every penny. It is small, light, and goes for 5hrs on a gallon of gas/oil mix. Was able to run 2x300w heaters and my return pump and iphone charger np or 1 heater, return pump, 180w leds, and iphone charger.

I bought an inverter and battery jump box last week online. I think shipping was only $7.00 but they shipped the jump in its original packaging which is very thin cardboard and it's damaged. Now I've got to return etc... which will end up taking more time than if I would have went to the store to begin with. Just an FYI.
