welcome to the club. you can definitely learn a lot here so ask away...best of luck!

Welcome and nice looking tank. What all equipment(lights, filtration, etc.) are runnig on the tank?

Thanks,I have a emperor 400 hang on filter ( I think I may need something better? Any suggestions?),125g coralife super skimmer, 2 175watt 10000k MH, 2 54 watt T-5 actinics, 2 295 GPH power heads, 1 400 GPH power head, and 3 cooling fans.

I ran HOB filters for a LONG time-they're ok, but more superior filtration would be a sump with a refugium--if you're tank's not drilled, you could either get it drilled or buy a HOB overflow--(drilling is better); you could even get a canister filter, but the sump w/ fuge is the best way to go

My tank is about 30 yrs old and has tempered glass on the bottom, so I couldn't drill it.How do the canister work,do they hang on or go in the bottom?

you don't drill the bottom-you drill the back or sides-these are the important ones to know if they are tempered or not; the canisters basically work by sucking the water out, forcing it through a filter-type media that typically houses activated carbon or some other media-and then pumps the water back into the tank; it's kinda the way a sump works, just on a much SMALLER scale (plus you can't put a fuge on a canister filter system). The advantage to a sump is you can get SO much more water volume in your system so if you are a little lazy with your water changes, then it doesn't hurt you as bad-and you can put more things in your tank too (because the water volume is greater). Now you can't put a powder blue tang in a 30 gallon just b/c you've got a 100 gallon sump in your basement, but it helps you push it a little bit.

Thanks, can I use a sump and just run the pipes over the back edge of the tank?I've got a hood so it would be hidden from view, what kind of sump should I look for IE $$$,water flow, capacity?

if you didn't drill the tank you would have to get overflows--I don't really like them, but that's what you'd need-you could hard pipe (PVC) it, or use the flexible drain line which is easy to work, but I prefer PVC. As far as what type of sump, you can use anything-an old tank, the bigger you can put under your tank the better, like I said, some even have their tanks plumbed into their basement and a HUGE sump there, but that's not feasible for most people. For a reef tank, if the more turnover the better for the sump end (for the most part). You don't want it looking like a storm in there, but want pretty decent flow--for a 75, I'd say a Mag 7 (I guess they make mag 7's). and the fuge you want low flow in it. What some people do is from the sump have it overflowing into fuge, then pumped backinto sump with a small pump. Look around at member's tanks, and that will help you visualize what I'm describing. Heck-I asked a LFS to look under some of their displays to get ideas-

yeah-def. do a LOT of research--I 've re-done my stuff and wasted a lot of $$$; this time, though, I would know how to do it. It's just a learning curve in this hobby, just great to have places like ARC with its members to help with ideas and questions. Hope this helped, and ask away if you have more ??'s.

Welcome! I am kinda a newb too. I have gained a lot of smatrs from the crew around here!!!! I only have a 55 and a sump under it. Good luck and keep reading, I am here every day! I read and read and read an the more I read the more I know how dumb I realy ARE!!!!!
