I bought a skimmer which can be used both HOB and in sump(125g). Ive seen many go through hell because of sump problems or power outages. So , it worked fine on 4th of July weekend when I was away. I plan to use this as my holiday mode or emergency if the sump breaks. Anyone who runs large HOB systems? and opinions on my strategy ?

Your best bet is in-sump. HOB mode may leak while you are out. If the power is out, the skimmer won't run anyway..... If you sump breaks, then that's an issue not caused by the skimmer.

Thanks. I was thinking of more of pump failure in the sump. so HOBs leak .. even at dry skimming mode ?

It can overflow from skimming or it can leak from the unit (untightened joints, cracks, etc). Not saying that all HOB due but it is risk you will take.

If it were in the sump, it would just leak in the sump without spillage to the floor.

If your sump is sized right, pump failures won't be a flooding issue.
