As for the unloved dino’s many/most experience during a tank start up, they play a role. Dino’s are niche pioneer organisms which are able to thrive when & where others don’t. Also, they likely provide an early source of organic carbon, essential for other organisms to compete. Once they’ve done their thing, other species begin to colonize & eventually the dino’s blend in with the rest. They probably never go away completely.
