Is 2 250 watt Metal halides and two 36" t5's to much for a 40 gallon breeder frag tank?

Kinda lot for a frag tank IMO. If you were doing a full blown all SPS 40 breeder reef, I'd say OK but be careful. I would look at maybe a 4 bulb T5 fixture for a frag tank. If you were doing, say, a 24" cube frag tank, then I'd say a single 250 watt halide would be perfect. A 250 would also work on your 40, but you might want to keep more light loving corals, like sps, towards the center.

Thought so. Thanks for the info. Guess I will start looking for a 4 bulb light fixture

In a word YES. I used a 6 bulb 24" ATI sunpower unit over a 40B and it was a little too much so I ahd to raise it to lessen the impact.

I'm using a 4 bulb on mine and have to do the same thing.
