Japan trip.

I'm headed to Okinawa and Tokyo in May to see family. Im brand new to marine aquariums and I'm just curious if there is any good livestock out of Japan that I could ship back home.

Not sure if it would even be cheaper/more expensive or even possible but if I'm going why not look into it right?

I have a cousin that was stationed in Okinawa and went diving regularly. Based off of his pic's and videos I'd say, yes, there's some good stuff out that way.

He just started diving a few months back and thays definitely on the todo list. So would you just catch something in the wild? I was just thinking of checking LFS.

Honestly I wouldn't even consider wild caught in a foreign country. No idea what the laws are over there. Definitely hit up a LFS.

I wouldn't even consider this for a casual reefer. Too many legal hangups, ethical hangups and expenses.

I'm sure their LFS are cool though!

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I want to see if I can find a dragon eel somewhere over there.

P.S. Post pictures if you go. Some around here says it didn't happen without picture. I believe their from that state that starts with a m and its with an I.

You may want to check on the regulations on importing any live corals or fish back into the U.S.A.. Regardless of how you obtain them over there.

There's lots of great stuff you can ship back. Budget @ $2500 for shipping plus customs fees, though.

Im just doing fish for now. corals will be later on down the road.

You may want to check with the local authorities once you get there. If I'm not mistaken; the fines incurred for such an attempted event, may be greater than purchasing your own reef store back here in the states. While stationed in Japan, a variety of fish and other creatures would be caught in the small swells during low tide. It was a beautiful site and I did have an aquarium setup. I never thought about trying to catch any live creatures back them in the small swells. I just went to the local reef store off base and selected what I wanted. One purchase was a beautiful anemone that was amazing. I've never seen once since then and I've been in many local reef stores around this country.
