After reading an article on them I have fallen for these little guys. In the article I read they showed pics of families of them and an article saw online said only 1 per tank. Anyone have any personal info on these? Also if only one per tank, how hard is it to find a mated pair? My other worry was the mag article said a deep sea bed and I don;t have a deep one. Will a pile of rubble do? will they be happy? They remind me of those merkats for some reason and it would be great to have a little herd of 4 or so.

Pearly jawfish are very colonial, but others are usually very aggressive to conspecifics, and pairs are quite uncommon.

 that blows. I was reading another article that said 4" is min. :(

You can always make a burrow if you run a shallow sand bed. Some 3/4" PVC and an elbow, along with glue and some sand, and you won't even notice it.

I get mated pairs quite often when they are in season. The pvc could work but your system and pearlies will be healthier with 4in sand . I will see them around april so you have time to build your sandbed.

Ever seen a mated pair of blue spots?

how long have you guys kept the jawfish that you do have? I was told they don't survive in tanks for to long. Also if you had a dedicated tank, how small could it be?

Where did you hear that? Mine was doing fine for 3 months til he decided to go base jumping while I went home for Xmas break.

Dedicated for how many? I'd think a 30g cube with a DSB would make a pretty good jawfish home, and if you look at this month's Tank of the Month, they can do great in smaller tanks.

I had my pearly in a 40g hex for over 2.5 years.....he didn't do to hot on the move to his new place and died about 2 weeks ago......they have great personalities too.....probably gonna get another as soon as I see one!!!
