I'll start off by introducing myself. I am in the Athens area and have been keeping saltwater tanks for 15+ years. I am fairly new to ARC although I have been lurking for sometime. I have enjoyed getting to know others in the area with similar interest so figured I would post out a thread on my latest project. In the past I have had a 20L, 46 bow front, 54 corner, 60, 75 and a few nano AIO. Over the years I have been more obsessed with setups and continual change but latest project I am hoping is the beginning of a steady reef system that incorporates all that I know into a simple to maintain system. This will be the 'biggest' tank I have setup to date and don't think I will have an appetite for bigger.

This will be a 180 reef build with a standard 6x2x2 footprint reef ready glass tank. Having the 2 foot depth and 6 foot length I am looking to replicate the lagoon and back reef zones of a reef. I would have liked to have stuck with a biotope focus from the Carribean / Atlantic but many of the corals and fish I have are from years in the hobby and would hate to see them go. Ex: my maroon clown is over 15 years old and from one of my first tanks.

Ok.. enough talking here are some pictures

Here is the setup when I first acquired it.

I originally did some repairs to the bottom of the stand because it had some holes for other project intentions from previous owner. On s the bottom was repaired. I then sealed the bottom using silicone and bar glazing to create a waterproof stand bottom.

After a few weeks and convincing family to help with the move...tank and stand were placed inside. The tank will go where I previously had my 60 & 75 in my living room.

Now on to the fun stuff..after I broke down my existing tanks I moved everything into 2 60 gallon tanks for temporary holding..

Thanks Matt.. picked that up from another member and fragged it down..as I go through the build I will pick and choose corals from the collection for the 180 and then probably unload the rest or keep a few for backup.

Let me know if you sell some more of that hammer, I'd be interested in a few heads.

It looks really good. Nice job on the stand. Do you have a sump and an AC HOB?

Thanks Dan. In my temporary tank setups I have a sump/skimmer running (inside a Rubbermaid). I have a small hang on back breeder box running some miracle mud just to help. Everything in the temp tanks did just fine with a couple day breakdown and move/re-setup.

In the 180 setup I will be running only a sump. I will post some pictures and list of planned equipment later in the week.

Thanks Austin! I did have a 65+75 plumbed together with about 160 total gallons ... but agree finally bought a single big tank. I will be using the sump I got from you in this new setup!

Here is an update on the 180 build.

Under the tank basic equipment.
- Eshopps sump older style-36x14x16
- ATO container is an old sea clear acrylic aquarium. 20x10x20h and holds about 15+ gal.
- Refugium/Frag tank. 18x18x12 on a small stand.

For the refugium/frag tank. I built a 18x18x7 3 sided stand to raise up the tank and allow for room underneath for storing all my electrical.

I stained it and added holes in the back to route all the wires. I will add pictures once I plumb it to the sump and run all the wires.

Hello ARC!! I am back..Good to see my build thread is still here. Crazy to think it has been over 2 years since I started the 180 build out. Let's start out the update with a few pictures of how the initial setup process went.

First step place your sand and skimmer in the main tank..lol

Next add your live rock

Third add all the coral from holdings tanks

after hours -> days of organizing rocks / corals I landed on my layout for the far right side which would represent the reef zone with montipora and SPS colonies.

Here is a view of what the early tank setup looked once I completed all the live rock setup, coral placement. This was from about August 2017. I decided to place all my live rock at no higher than half the tank height. Coral colonies were also placed at about that height to allow from room to grow.

Looks great man!!! Love the wood!

And good call with the rockwork height! I’ve always thought the rocks should go no higher than 35-50% to allow for coral growth; especially on a beautiful tank like this!

Haha... and while I wouldn’t choose Cats Paw or Monti Cap; that’s the great thing about this hobby, everybody has different things that they love! It’s keeps each new tank looking unique.

Looking forward to seeing a 2019 photo!

Thank you ActiveAngel.. I will get some more recent pictures soon and details of my electronics and control panel.
