I just bought a TDS meter and it appears that my tap water contains72ppm (filtered water out of my fridgereads55ppm).Isthishorrible, average, good???

I am contemplating using tap water for filling up my new tank and was curious to see where the 72ppm or 55ppm stood in the grand scheme of things.

Thanks

Don't use tap water. You will hate yourself later on. Either buy ro water or get a unit

His post count just went up. :-) But I do agree. Get a RO/DI unit. Well worth it.

come on guys

I can't believe it's that high for you. That seems REALLY high. I'm in Johns Creek and mine is only 38 from the tap. I filter to 0. While you could use tap water.....I wouldn't recommend it. The money you'll spend fighting the net results would be better spent on an RO/DI unit.

OK, we will give you a brake. :-)

There is a guy on another forum that only uses di and has an extremely successful tank.

If cost is an issue, got to
a> They have some portable units that do a good job for a cheap price. The portables don't have all the bells and whistles but they don't have the huge price tag either. I use one and so far so good.

Useless posts just to raise post count are not allowed here and are deleted. Continued post padding after being warned can result in suspension of posting privileges.

We are a community here. The main issue is many people register here, make a bunch of crud posts, then start listing things for sale. We do not allow that. Posts that are meaningful in content indicate a desire to use this forum the way it was intended, to exchange and receive information about the reef hobby. The FS Forum is a convenience for Members and Users, not just a tool for anyone wanting to sell things.

If you wish to avoid post minimums, then one option is to become a paid Member. That is not to encourage you to pay dues, just providing you one option to avoid post minimums.

The above being said, welcome to the Forums. The above is not aimed at you in particular. Just providing information on how the Moderators and BoD view posting etiquette on this website to avoid future misunderstandings.

Your about an hour and a half N of me. I'm assuming the surrounding ATL areas have better water plants?

The above post has a BRS 5 RO/DI for $175. I have this exact unit and it runs wonderfully!

Seems like a good deal but it's an hour and half away (one way). How much would the filters cost that are needed in that?

RO/DI all the way man or buy it from somewhere. You will have a war on your hands with algae if you use tap water. In fresh water you can get away with that, but in salt dont even think about it.

In the grand scheme of tap water, 72 ppm isn't bad at all. I've heard of places with 400+ ppm out of the tap. But, I'm not saying to use it in your tank. Get a filter. An API Tap Water Filter is an inexpensive alternative if you are space limited.
