Just got home and my new Kessil A350W was waiting for me at the door. Got this off eBay for $299 shipped, took forever to arrive.

Now I realize that this is a discontinued product, but at $299 I couldn't resist the purchase price. I've read that the color is not as good on the A360, and some of the benefits to the newer model simply do not appeal to me since I will only need one unit and have no need to link them.

The first feeling I felt opening the box was disappointment. Kessil, a company who I have been singing the praises of ever since I purchased an a150w last year, certainly cut some corners on this model to reduce cost. It feels cheap and light and the outer shell is thin plastic. The A150 has a sturdy feel and the outer casing is metal. There is a very noticeable side by side quality. I have some pictures to post and you might be able to see the difference in the iPhone pic. But in person there is a very noticeable difference. I was expecting the same quality build when purchasing a unit that was supposed to be superior to the one I already own. So poor rating from me on build quality here.

I also immediately noticed that the LED chip is off center with the optic lense. I would think this would make a pretty big difference in the overall performance.

As far as the performance of the light, it better be pretty impressive or Kessil has lost a customer with me. If the unit has any sort of defect, it will be replaced with an A360, since they are no longer manufacturing the A350. Time will tell.

Okay so here's some reasons why I'm not as disappointed after setting the light up...

1. The shimmer. Oh my goodness.
2. ITS TRUE WHAT THEY SAY. Little perfect fish shaped shadows on the sandbed...!!!!!!
3. The ability to control all the way from blue to white. It does seem much like a regular 2 channel dimmable light, but, that's something I've been missing for a little while. And it's awesome.
4. The pattern cast across the wall/ceiling over the tank. Sort of like what you see in the bottom of a pool on a sunny day. But cooler. It's very calming actually, and I won't mind it in the bedroom one bit.
5. Not too bright. This is a big favor for a bedroom tank, especially when it's rimless and you don't want any sort of canopy. Spilling light from the 400w radium has been such an issue. This is perfect for my needs.

I'm still irritated by the build quality though. The led chip being off center doesn't seem to cause a huge issue, but I'm not happy about that either.

After plugging it up, I'll hold my complaints for now. Did I mention the shimmer.... Wow.

Get it used of ebay or is it supposed to be new? I'd contact Kessil about the chip if it's new. Heck, even if it's not. Their CS is supposed to be extremely good.

Call them up! And yes, the shimmer is fantastic. I'll try to remember to take a look at my 360's chip tonight after it turns off and see if it's centered perfectly or not. I didn't notice when I first got it but that doesn't mean it wasn't.

I sent them an email expressing my concerns about the chip. We'll see what they have to say

Thanks jimmy it's finally coming together.. I'm glad I never set it up the first couple rounds, but I think it's time has finally come. One month or less to water

Here's what I have so far

Deep Blue 60 RR rimless cube
Custom Stand by Allen
Custom MRC sump (picking up tmrw hopefully)
Reef Octopus NWB 110 skimmer
Kessil A350w

What might make the cut but will be upgraded:
Mag 5 (want a DC pump)
WP-25 (want a vortech, or a newer jebao)

Everything else that was once on this list is scratched. Including two lightly used 1.1 ml brs pumps that I cleverly stored in a trash bag on the floor. They were thrown away for me! I think I'm gonna go the calcium reactor route anyway, I think it's worth it for the set and forget.

So I'll likely be doing manual 2 part/ lots of testing while I save for a reactor. Controller will likely come first. What I'm probably most exited about is scaping the tank, I've got some great rock from Dylan. Will be going sandy bottomed with 40 lbs of seafloor special (white)

The only thing I'm sure of so far on the stock list is my snowflakes & derasa clam. I really want a purple or blue kole tang. And, I think I'm going to have one. Not sure exactly what other fish

I have some ideas of the corals I want.. Lots of montipora, lots of mushrooms, no acropora, probably not many zoas. Scolys, more LPS. A nice bubble tip. But that's all up in the air still. I'm in no rush to buy coral.

Keep an eye out for the actual build thread! (For real this time lol)

Very cool. I'll be going to a 60cube soon and possibly looking at this light as well. You'll have to let snap some pics once you're all set up.

I'll give them some time to respond, it's only been a few days. They could be busy, I think it's a small team. I'm not quite ready to give up on kessil quite yet

I wouldn't say give up. I love my Kessil's. Just in general, social media will get you a much faster CS response.

i called them a few times with questions prior to buying 2. They answered the phone both times without issue.

Heard back from kessil. They said to "Please contact innovative grow lights, they will be happy to assist you"

THUMBS DOWN

I typed out a lengthy message and they did not respond to one of my concerns. They simply said to contact the seller I bought it from, and gave me their contact info.

That is crappy CS if you ask me, won't be buying from kessil again.
