Got this frag at the frag swap, its a piece of the large chalice that was up in the 10 gallon display tank at the sign in desk. It's been lacking color ever since I brought it home so I started with it being down on the sand for a week, then moved it up to mid tank a few days ago.
My question is: Where is the best place to have a chalice for it to regain color and happiness?

I have a slightly taller than normal 10 gal size (11.5gals) with SG at 1.024, high flow in the tank (800gph+) with a brand new phoenix 14k 150w bulb over it.

Should I have it up high or back down low?

here's what it looks like at the moment:

Don't think it has changed much. If not gotten worse...

id get it in lower light and flow. but of all the frags i brought home from the swap this chalice has been the most difficult to color back up. mines not doing "bad" but i think its just going to take a while for these to get their color back. maybe someone else will chime in that got one and let us know where they have it.

Chalices in general like low light/low flow. If they are wild caught chalices fresh off the boat, I find that any direct light at all will bleach them out. They are as sensitive as any coral I buy when they are fresh out of the ocean.

Over the summer, my LEDs at home were left on too bright for a month or two while I was away and I lost 90% of my chalices, which ones were left? The old school aquacultured ones; Miami hurricane, pink boobies, and Red Watermelon. And all of those were mid-high in the tank as well.

While my story is rambling, there is a point; put the chalice in indirect light, low flow, and leave it alone. Mostly only aquacultured chalices that have been in captive tanks for more than a few years tend to do well under our intense light.

Mines looks pretty much the same. I have mine about 5in from the sand bed. Everyone in awhile I see a little bit of green to it. Other than the color being a little dull it seems to be fine. Is there a pic of the colony b4 hand around btw?

for what its worth i actually ended up with 2 frags of this somehow (no clue how just had too many frags in the cooler i guess) and just to play around i have one up high and its doing just as good as the larger piece thats down low.

the guys that brought it to me i tossed it in the sump. All three are dark green and purple within a week.

i might just try that with my "experiment" frag

I would suggest you out it under a rock rather than a sump if ur system isn't set to have coral in the sump .chalices are tough if you remember the My Miami that got eaten in my tank. I have an tiny eye still ( down from 14 !!)

Edit:

Well , I'm not sure . They weren't mine. I never picked up any free frags for myself

i assume you have some sort of light under the tank if you threw it in the sump? ive got it set up to hold a few frags if need be, but the lighting down there is just pc from the fuge.

I have a few led under my tank to test color spectrum ATM. But only running about 30% so it's low light.

well ill let you know how it works out. in the mean time still curious about that red dragon situation i pm'd you about.

sorry for the hijack

Mine are in 2 places. both showing great growth. but as for experience . Oz is your man. I am still experimenting with that particular acro

my chalice is under my frag rack thats full of corals. it has a nice deep green color.

I threw it in my refugium that has lower wattage LED lighting and a lot less flow. Hopefully it will start to regain some color in there, thanks guys!
