Tank has been being water testing for the past two weeks. Tonight I moved the tank into the house from the garage and now the overflow bulkhead is leaking. Who sales 1 in bulkheads? Anyone know what is the stock kind of bulkhead with oceanic tanks? I can't tell if it's slip/slip or what. Can I just change out the gasket and keep the bulkhead so I don't have to redo some of the plumbing?

Gasket should be all u need as long as u can remove bulkhead without cutting it

I sell them, slip x slip.

Depends what the problem is - if it's not seated properly, re-seating it may fix the problem. It could also be that the bulkhead is cracked, causing the leak.

I may have a spare gasket lying around. Make sure the gasket is on the wet *and* bolt side. If you put it on the nut side it will twist and pinch (and leak).

Pull it off. If it is not damaged and the gasket isn't deformed, apply a thin coating of plumbers grease and re-install. Over tightening is usually what causes them to leak.

The standard bulkheads on my Oceanic were slip/barb but I replaced them with slip/slip so I could glue the outside the tank parts. If it really needs replaced you can use whichever type you want depending on how you want to plumb it but you probably want the inside to be slip so you can pull the overflow pipes if needed. Do you already have things plumbed? When water testing in the garage, did you have water in the overflow? What is attached both inside and outside of the tank? That should tell you what type bulkhead is already there. As others said, inspect it carefully and try to determine where it is actually leaking.

I have cracked a bulkhead from over tightening... I tried lots of trick to repair it with no success. If the gasket is on the right side, I suspect it cracked. They are fairly inexpensive. I would just replace it for peace of mind. Pure reef and marine design also have them.

The bulk head is loose for sure, I can twist the pvc and it will turn. But I don't have a pair of channel locks around to fix it right now. I am heading to lowes in a little while, I have silicone grease as well so I will give that a shot.

Jenn thanks and if it comes down to it I will head your way, it's just like a 3 hour trip lol..

I have channel locks and live close enough to swing by. Let me know. 678-908-9one13.

Make sure the plumbing is not pulling on the bulkhead, I had a small leak in the same place once because of that.

While replacing it is the best option if cracked, weldon will work on the bulkhead. It doesn't weld it like acrylic would but will act like an epoxy would. Don't ask me how I know this. LOL

I have a bulkhead wrench you can borrow or if you want another set of eyes on it I could stop by.

Bud, if you would be willing to drop by I would LOVE a second opinion. I'm only about 5 mins down the road from you. I'll PM you the details.

I thought it might be plumbing pulling on it but I took off the plumbing and just left the one end of the union on it and it was still leaking.

DB I'm sure Jorge or Mike have bulkheads if they're closer to you (Pure Reef or Marine Design).

At this point I'd replace it - since you'd always wonder IF it might leak again.

Thank Jenn, I am kicking myself for not dropping by your store yesterday since I was only 3-4 exits south of you. Next time I go to Alabama I will stop by for sure. Thanks for your help, I will more than likely head to Marine design later today. Since they would be the closest. Unless SEA or Nemo would have them.

I keep a pair of latex dishwasher type gloves with my fish equipment. It increases your grip strength quite a bit, and you should be able to wear these and hand tighten tight enough. If you use channel locks, be sure not to overtighten, as the threads are only plastic. I've never had to use channel locks with bulkheads.

Standard instrutions for bulkheads are hand tighten, then once it stops, go another 1/8-1/4 turn.
