So I have been concidering switching to LED's on my display, and heard that these are a cheap alternative. I currently can't afford a big LED system for my 72 bowfront, so I am debating putting 2 of these over it. This has 450 5mm LEDs in it, half blue half white. This would be cheap and convenient. Do you think this would work for a reef tank? Let me know what you think!

Edit: Sorry I posted the wrong link. I meant 1 of these.

Thats what I have heard just wanted to see if anyone knew anything about them. apparently the bulbs are only like 1/4th of a watt

I thought I saw 13w per unit... Can't seem to find that area.

On my phone in eBay mobile version, pita.

You could probably do with a few of these @ $143/each

The LED's need to have at least 3w each if you want to punch farther than 12 inches down

the ecoray60 uses 1w led and is able to purduce 350par at 18in 240 at 24

With 30degree optics maybe - I am testing a 55x3W unit right now and without optics it is around 300par through 24" of water

I've got 20 3w LEDs over my gallon freshwater tank. The DYI cost was like $200. I think you should look down that path if you want cheap LEDs.

The big question is what you can deal with in price vs feature.

Prebuilt high end = Big cost, nice build, complete control & integration right out of the box.

Prebuilt low end = much lower cost, some good some bad builds, few have dimming control or controller integration.

DIY = lower cost, turns out as well as YOU make it. Integration & dimming possible with time & development on your end.

Personally, I could have done DIY and saved a few bucks, but a high end pre-built was worth the extra cost in trade for the time it would have required from me.

Well, for starters some of the LED systems under consideration in this thread are more in line with metal halide systems with regards to light output. I'd imaging that without the ability to control the light level to acclimate the existing corals in your tank you'd stand a good chance of shocking/bleaching/killing them.

A 3W white LED puts out a LOT of light. Couple an array of them with narrow-degree optics and you're pointing something like what illuminates the Luxor hotel down into your tank. ;-)
