To those that have done some research on LED take a look at these and let me know what you think. I'd love to be able to go completely with LED but I am wanting to be able to grow any SPS I want, so I'm a little pessimistic. I was looking at the upcoming models for 2010

Looks like (quick mental calculation) the entry level price is somewhere north of $2 grand! Breaks my wife's reef lighting budget (and she doesn't 'do' fish/coral/etc-lol).

wow...I didn't realize it was gonna cost that much. I'll check out the link above. I'd really like to see what happens in the next 6 months with the LED lighting industry. It'll be that long before I'm ready to set up my tank

this site show you how to build one.
Thanks for that link!

I'm always game for a project like this! As others have discovered, getting high power LED's at a reasonable cost is difficult. Maybe we can find a way to do a 'group buy' type of deal, even if we have to pool our funds on our end, for a discount.

Me too!!! I'll be in Atlanta starting Feb 1st. I'll be in corporate housing in Alpharetta until my house sells. We are planning on buying a house in Suwanee or Cumming. I'll have a lot of free time to do a project. I need to read through the RC post above, but I'm interested in what it costs to make one. I'd like to have one big enough to light a 36" cube that's 27" deep and use only LED

Read this, know it, love it. It will answer all your questions.

This will give you some ideas.

Ok Dawg, when my wife asks what happened, it's your fault!-lol!!!

I ran across this video. Looks like it is growing SPS on the bottom of the tank. I don't know how demanding these are but I thought there is some light at the end of the tunnel as far as capability goes for LED to be able to grow SPS. I'll probably end up going with a 400 watt MH fixture, which by the way...... I need to post another thread to see what fixture might work best

I was sent this link from a guy who is running all LED and says so far so good. They did a group buy. Might be something to look into if we can get data to back up what is needed to support a reef tank

I've had some designs for LED lighting and some relatively inexpesive controllers drawn out for about a year. When ever I get some extra cash something always comes up to use it up, other than the stuff for the LED project. Here are some places that have all kinds of LEDs

I've done a good bit of research and searching for LED sites. These 2 sites seem to have good selections and good information. Prices are good here too. This post took me almost 30 minutea since no matter what I'm doing isn't as important as clening up where the dog decided to mess or finding a shoe for one of the grand kids, sorry just ranting. Hope this LED stuff helps, usually do my research and designs when the rest of the house is sleeping.

Idont know the first thing about LED lighting other than whàt I've read online and I really haven't had much time to do that since we are getting ready for the move to the ATL area. But, I did see on there that the 120 unit would light a 3 ft area and that's what I was hoping for with the 3ftx3ft tank I am planning. It also said that it was equivalent to a 400 watt MH. I need to do more research on it obviously. What is a good PAR number for SPS/LPS in a 27" deep tank?

If I could find a good led unit that I can afford I might do that over a diy just due to being able to have a warranty

These lights actually look pretty good. I seriously looked a them. If you dig there are several nice youtube tank videos with incredibly bright light in them from just these units.

These units use lots of 1 watt LEDs. Company is European, in Poland.

Named Pacific Sun: website: [IMG]http://www.aquariumled.eu/shop/">http://www.aquariumled.eu/shop/</a>

But the Group Buy Link you posted is over. The fixtures have taken a large price increase (over $300 compared to the group buy). The MR Sponsor doing it is going to be the US Distributor of these fixtures.

Here is the thread for the intro specials they are running, but be warned-the prices are high: [IMG]http://www.manhattanreefs.com/forum/aloha-tropics/69458-pacificsun-led-pre-launch-sale.html">http://www.manhattanreefs.com/forum/aloha-tropics/69458-pacificsun-led-pre-launch-sale.html</a>

Feedback and pictures thread from the now over Group Buy:

When all is said and done, the cost for lighting my 210 SPS tank is within $400 plus or minus compared to lighting with AquaIllumination modules, and personally I'd rather go with them becasue they are American made, and they are upgradeable, and they use the 3 watt CREE XP-G modules.

The PacSun philosophy is to use more lower power leds to get a better spread, whereas AI uses higher power with optics to get stronger light and better penetration.

a guy on RC sent this link to me. I had never heard of them before and don't know if he is associated with selling these or not

Hmm, that 110w looks like a good replacement for my MH on the frag tank. I think one of the reasons they're cheaper is there's little control over the ramping up and down, it looks like you get blue on/off and white on/off on timers, but no variable control for tuning colors.

C'mon tax refund!

I don't know if this will work. Here is a copy of the info I ran across on the newer model of these LEDs.

The second generation Maxspect specification is released:

1) Moonlight confirmed.
2) Some of the blue LED bulbs are replaced by violet LED bulbs for better color spectrum (see the spec sheet below).
3) Can install the fixture with a rail system or hanging system.
4) Bulbs are now socket based for easier replacement.
5) New 80cm (31.5") models for larger tanks.
6) Up to 4 separate timers (depends on model) for LED on/off control.
