Ok...I feel like a moron....My Sally Lightfoot molted and when I found the "remains" I thought my lightfoot died. The molt was all one piece no cracks not holes and was all dark and all the legs and claws were attached and I could have testified that it was a died crab. So you could understand how surprised I was to see a Sally Lightfoot climbing in and out of the rocks 1 day later. :confused2: I think my mouth dropped and hit the floor. So my question is, how on earth can you tell when a real crab death occurs or I have a decoy molt? I'm glad I didn't go out right away and purchased another one....

My coral banded shrimp molted and I thought he died. But two weeks ago I thought he molted again... found the <span style="color: black">empty shell</span>, etc, etc... and haven't seen him since. I think he bit the dust this time.
But I'll hitch for the ride... how do you tell the difference between a molt and a dead animal.

Well...That's just it....Before this happen I wouldn't have thought of opening the remains. It looked like a total crab all in one piece...and I think it happened before any other scavengers could get to it...Because I just finished feeding the tank and I left to go clean my hands when my wife came in right behind me and said why did I leave that dead crab in there....And the shell was right in the middle in the open....Hard to miss. So I think it just fell from the rocks and landed on the bottom just moments before. You right though...if it was real then the scavengers would be all over it.

ive had that happen too. i freaked out and thought i lost a crab as well.
from then on i just pick up the shell and use my fingers to bust open a claw, and look for meat inside.
