Help! My Mag 7 is making a rattling noise when run. I removed the impeller cover, and noticed that the impeller was standing off with 3 metal washers, but they were 3 on 1 end and 2 on the other. I changed it to two and two but it is still rattling. Is it supposed to rattle a bit?

Check the impeller cover. The little hub where the bushing from the impeller shaft might be cracked or broken, and that will allow the impeller to rattle. If not replaced, that will eventually ruin the pump.

Took of the cover and all looked fine. This pump is brand new too. Bringing it back to store to have Chris look at it

Is it rattling when you plug it in dry, or when it's installed and submerged?

I believe a Mag pump will also rattle with dirty power. I thought I read somewhere that if the power supply to the pump is from something like a power supply/strip, that it can sometimes cause a rattle.

I have it plumbed externally. It rattles when running with water. Worse when I ran it dry for 2 seconds.

It is almost like the magnets are causing the two piece impellor to stutter... causing the nose. Happens when plugged in directly as well.

Mag Drives aren't a great choice for running external. Inevitably, they will leak. My suggestion would be either to install it submersed, or change to a pump made for external use.

If you MUST use it external, put a little tray or something under it to catch the leak when it happens.

now's your chance to replace it with [just about any] pump that will use 3/4 the power and is quieter..

try one of the small blue line HD pumps.. (or the extremely silent velocity line of pumps by blue line)

I have an older one that rattles a little after I clean it, seems to do better when a lil slime gets in the hole

Pump is on its way back to MFG for a replacement. Pump was already paid for so I am going to stick with it for the time being. Once a leak occurs I should be in a better position to buy a different pump. I have spoken to people who have had this pump running externally for years with no problem. I am curious where the failures are occurring since there are only 3 places it could leak.

1 - The rubber gasket is failing.
2 and 3 - The 2 connections. Is it possible people are using too much or not enough teflon tape, or installing the tape backwards, if this is where it is leaking?

OR the case begins to get brittle and developing hairline cracks that cause a leakage...

Either way I am forced to use this until it shows signs of dripping/leaking. I am pot committed so to speak.

Sorry Jenn, can you dumb this down for me a bit. I know what a stair rail volute is but not a pump :)

Volute: Impeller cover. Where the o-ring seals up that's where it usually leaks.
