The rate at which the water passes by a skimmer has no effect on it's performance unless it is too slow and starves the skimmer of "dirty "water . Flow through the skimmer,"dwell time", will affect it's performance. The GPH passing by a recirculating skimmer that is fed via an overflow or feed pump has absolutely no effect on it's performance, fast or slow. Sump flow rate can however have an effect on other filtration components such as filter socks etc. Even then I think you are fine with the 500gph. You can dial it back if needed and the power consumption will actuallly decrease along with the heat. IMO there are better and cooler pumps out there that would serve you better.
