Looking to get another pump as a back up for my 25 gallon cube with 10 gallon sump. Would a mag 7 be too much flow for this tank? If so what would be more appropriate. I am also running an MP 10.

after over-estimated head loss you're looking at around 500 gph from a mag 7

Edit: which is easily twice as much as you need, btw

The rate at which the water passes by a skimmer has no effect on it's performance unless it is too slow and starves the skimmer of "dirty "water . Flow through the skimmer,"dwell time", will affect it's performance. The GPH passing by a recirculating skimmer that is fed via an overflow or feed pump has absolutely no effect on it's performance, fast or slow. Sump flow rate can however have an effect on other filtration components such as filter socks etc. Even then I think you are fine with the 500gph. You can dial it back if needed and the power consumption will actuallly decrease along with the heat. IMO there are better and cooler pumps out there that would serve you better. Eheim, Sicce,Marineland and Quite Ones to name a few

Grouper is right on! While "by the numbers" you only need proximately 150 gph on the return pump. The problem is that a small pump like that generally can not handle the head pressure. You'd be better of using something like a Quiet One 2200 and put a valve on it.
