Mag 9.5 running external?

I'm going to replace my current sump for my frag system with a 55G and plan on running an external return pump. I'm thinking a Mag 9.5 would be about right and would like to know if any others are running Mag pumps externally and if there are any problems with doing that?

My CA reactor has a mag 2 or 3 is external and it rattles and viberates pretty badly, and gets annoying.

I was running a mag 9 on my 92 Bud...I had no issues in noise or quality...I had one in a sump on my 90 and had to cushion and secure it from vibration but no concerns of that externally for some reason...

check out dawgdude's suggestion in my internal pump review thread.. (great idea for isolating an internal pump)

While I love Mag Drives for submersed use, they are NOT one I recommend for external use. They can be used that way but they are notorious for leaking around the volute.

I wouldn't do it. Use a real external pump and save yourself the hassle. You're too old to worry about a leaking pump :D

Possible yes, recommended no.

and 90% of the time if a magdrive is vibrating its due to the bushings on the impeller shaft being worn out.

Thanks for all, or at least most of the inputs! :)

So if I don't use a Mag externally, what would be a better choice without breaking the bank. I currently use Iwaki on my rodi system and a Reeflo Sequence for my 120G system, but didn't want to spend that kind of money again. I'm currently using an OR 2500 submerged to run my frag system.

I've got a mag 7 that I purchased 3 weeks ago running my skimmer. It vibrated straight out of the box.

that was sort of discussed in the other thread. I think that Rob said that he's used Quiet1 pumps externally with good results.. (and they are cheaper than the Danner mag pumps)

I have been running a Mag 9.5 on a closed loop, externally mounted on my tank and I have not seen any leaks and no vibration or odd sounds of any sorts. It has been running for over four years! :yay:

I had a mag 9.5 work just fine as an external for a while. But, after about a year I woke up to water on the floor and the smoke in the mag 9.5 had come out. No more running mag pumps externally for me. I did replace the burned out pump with one just like it, but now only run them from inside the sump.
