I have about a 20 gallon sump. I have a reef octopus skimmer in there and my return pump is in the water and its a MAG5.

I am having a real heat problem. I cant move the skimmer, but what do you think the MAG5 is giving me in heat. Can i run the mag5 out of the water? Pulling water from the sump and back to my display tank?

I am metal halides but i dont think thats where the heat is. The water in my sump runs at about 84 degrees!!

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I am going to get fans, but wonder if i am just kidding myself, and i would be good if i could get rid of the mag5 heat.

I dont want to buy a chiller... so expensive.

Well yes, the Mag 5 is generating heat. I used to run Mag pumps but got rid of them for this reason as well as others (they leak very easily so outside the sump wasn't an option for me). I switched to Quiet One pumps and saw at least a 3 degree drop in temps. Your Metal Halides also produce a lot of heat. If you don't already have a fan on them, I suggest you put one. That will help but probably not completely resolve the issue.

I ran a mag5 pump in my 65g w/15g sump.... I also ran a 250wATT MH

I never noticed the mag5 putting out excessive heat

Check your temp in the morning before the lights come on, I bet you'll find it's plenty cool.

I never thought running an external pump was worth the risk of a serious leak.... Least of all a Mag pump

at 84 degrees, you don't need a chiller, you just need a fan blowing on the sump.

I think this is a 7 dollar fix, IMHO

Just my anecdote, I've noticed that mag pumps run warm too. I like using them for mixing pumps in the winter so I don't have to run a heater in the mixing tank. On the display, I prefer to use the equivalent Quiet One pumps as they seem to run cooler (2200 is close to the mag 5 - a little more efficient - probably why it runs cooler).

Look at one of these..low power consumption, quite and gives off less heat.

You need to add a fan in your sump and also have a fan running across your MH light to help disapate the heat from the MH lights. I have a 400 gallon system and never run a chiller. Fans are a reefers best friend!!
