MH ballast testing

So, can someone describe to me how to see if my MH ballast is working? I don't want to lick the plug.

I have ohm meter and such
What do I set it to? Where do I stick it (no jokes please)
It doesn't fire the lamps, so I'm trouble shooting one thing at a time.

not trying to be a smart ***, but if its not firing the lamps, doesn't that just mean that the ballast went bad? just like any other ballast?

oh ok... didn't even think about that. I would have just assumed it was the ballast and replaced it.

Get yourself a multimeter, they are like $10.

and learning how to use it priceless!

I'll see if I can snap a pic of one of my old ones.... I think there are like 4 or 5 pieces. On mine, the plug arced over to the capacitor and scorched the wiring, turned out to be a three dollar fix and I upgraded to better parts.
