ok guys im thinking of going to mh but dont know what isze ill need for my 90gal. anyone with a 90 have my? and what are the pros and cons of mh? might just go with t5 but still need to know the pros and cons of both?

MH Pros: more penetration (that's what she said!) to support SPS and clams deeper, shimmer, bulb cost can be lower

MH Cons: color specturm may have to be accentuated by T5, VHO, or PC, heat, power bill may go up

T5 Pros: even coverage, good penetration with good bulbs and reflectors up to around 21-24" (more if overdriven), endless color combos

T5 Cons: may need high-light corals in the top of the tank, replacing bulbs can be pricey depending on when/where you get them, may not be able to support SPS on the bottom of the tank, endless color combos

One other pro for T5's is that the heat is usually pretty manageable without the need for chillers.
b can you post some pics of your tank?

2x 250W MH's should be good for a 90G.

I happen to have those FS. Haha

Haha, here ya go.

They were on my 120, and everything was great. I just picked up 400W so I could redesign the canopy, and move the lights up higher, while maintaining the same PAR below.

No idea. They are in my canopy already. They have Icecap stickers on them, but when I look on their website, there are non mentioned.

I would recommend the Spiderlight ones if you are going to buy some.

I've emailed several buyers of this light and they give it great reviews. I'm considering going with a simarlar light to this myself.

Pros would be;

Less heat, less electricity. The same MH shimmer effect without the heavy bulky MH issues you run into. One single electrical wire per unit, that bfits in a typical 110 outlet. Ballast free, and can easily fit under a canopy.

Cons would be;

Unproven track record from the manufacturor (you spins the wheel, you takes your chances. Lack of customer service should an issue arrise (keeping in mind, if you buy used mh lighting from a member here, you'll have the same issue). YOU'LL NEED ONE UNIT FOR EVERY LINEAR FOOT OF YOUR TANK, as reported from the people who purchased these lights, as they have zero, nadda, no spread at all. (fortunately the seller does privide decent price breaks on multiple units.)

With these lights becoming more readily available, I think MH is a thing of the past. Very expensive to purchase and operate, bulky (and sometimes)dangerous to use.

I know, I know, people talk about cheap Chinese imports a lot when it comes to lighting and lamps, but take a good look around your home, I bet you (all of you) are already using lamps around your house that are made in China, in fact, I'd venture to say that most items you plug into an outlet in your home are made in China.

Just food for thought.........

People tend to think in those terms, but potentionly, it means zero bulb purchases for the next 10 years and far less on your power bill.

Is your tank 8 feet long? should only require 4 fixtures for a 4 foot tank

lol i was think i would need 8 lol it is only 4 foot i just thought you said they had no spread so thats why i was thinking 8 and not just 4

I bought someone else's setup (supposedly he owned a LFS in lawrenceville a while back)

mine came with 4-VHO actinics(not sure of the wattage, they are T-12's) and 2-250w MH....

I'm redoing the canopy, but I'll put the same lights back in (rewired and cleaned up)

jgilley84;359327 wrote: i was just doing some math. and that would only be 192 watts would that be ok i mean pc have more watts then that?

Supposedly</em>.......

Since LED puts out more lumens per watt, you get a brighter light than with MH. I saw where the light from a 90 watt fixture was being compared to a 400 to 600 watt MH fixture........ But this is hearsay really, maybe someone else could chime in....
