First the background info. Tank was doing great up until about about 6 weeks ago. Slowly, things just didn't look as good but not bad either. My skimmer started to make some noise (slight vibration) and I thought it might need cleaning. In the process of pulling it out, I stirred up a bunch of crud in the sump. I have dosed nothing but Alk for months on end and Alk only lightly. Have not dosed mag in probably six months.
In the last two weeks and especially the past week the deterioration has accelerated. I have lost several SPS while others are fine. I have lost most of a gorgeous multi head torch. Months are not looking good at all. Galaxia has no extension yet was exploding before. Duncan's look better than ever hammers are great, anemone is thriving. Zoas and plays are doing fantastic. Blue tip stag horn has always grown like a weed but has increased three fold. All good size fish are fine but I think I lost a fire fish.
Temp 78-79
PH 8.0 (never changes)
Am 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate very close to 0
Cal480
Alk has been low but been getting it up. As of today Alk is at about 8
Here is the kicker. Mag is up to 1700. Have not dosed anything on mag in forever. I do about 13 gal water change almost every week. Total volume about 140 gal.
I am pretty sure the mag is the killer but what is causing it to increase so high? I use Red Sea Coral Pro salt. Could it be that with low Alk nothing depletes the mag but yet the salt keeps adding it?
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Rich
