I bought a new Seachem ReefSalt bucket. Yesterday, I mixed about 30gal (Salinity: 1.026). I checked Ca & dKH of mixing water this morning. They are not right.

Ca: 520 (too high)
dKH: 9.0

I tested 3 times with Salifert (expiration date 2014). The results are the same.

Is this a bad bucket or bad test kits?

Does anyone have this problem?

thanks,

sometimes you need to mix the bucket up a little. when i got to the bottom of myh bucket the alk was on the high side. calcium shouldnt be that high though.

If you ate using it during a waterchange wouldn't it level out a bit if they are already a bit low in the tank?

Calcium is not far off of what I usually see, but I've never gotten an alk reading anywhere near that high.

My alk test is Seachem, which reads in meq/l, but I get about 2.5

same test kit here - I get around 4 meq/l....calcium much lower - around 420

Someone over on RC did a bunch of testing last September (I have a copy of the results posted on a bulletin board here in the shop)... I just looked at what they got for Seachem Reef Salt. Your results seem fairly consistent with theirs (give or take).

They got:

CA 540, dKH 10, and MG 1450.

Yes some settling can occur so it's not a bad idea to mix the salt up a bit before measuring out your portion. However I don't see your results as out of line with that other person's.

it's great that my results are not out of line. I am going to another test again tomorrow.
