Sorry for the AWFUL photography. I'm going to have to start working on my skills. Anyone have advice for settings to use on an HP photosmart R817?

Try turning off the flash. Then you'll probably have to adjust the white balance somehow. I'm not sure how the HP R817 works, but there might be a "warm" filter that accomplishes the same thing.
