Hi there, I have question about mounting eb8 to controller board. Does this have to be placed on the front of the board as I see everywhere? Makes sense to me to have it on back side...Apex newb but want to do this correctly from the start. All opinions appreciated.

You can do either way, I prefer in front so incase you have to plug it unplug anything plus you can see what is in each outlet. For example if you need to reprogram the skimmer, you can find the cord and see which outlet it is. But ultimately it comes down to your preference. I have mine on the front with flat plugs to make it cleaner.

Do you still need wave pumps on board if the controller is doing its job?

Not really, but I also then there for ease of access if I needed to. Plus you will discover there will be a lot of wires behind your false wall! So the edgier it is to reach the happier you will be down the road.
