MP 40 What are the differences in :

First Gen

Second gen

Third Gen the newest one?

Is there any pros/cons for any of them? (from one to the other)

Just a difference in what they can do. Gen 2 (W) added wireless (to make multiple pumps work off of the settings on one driver). Gen 3 (ES) added "Eco-Smart" modes. The one of particular interest is "nutrient export" mode that is supposed to be very turbulent and suspend detritus in the water column to be skimmed or filtered out.

If you are only going to use one, then frankly I would buy whichever one I could get the best deal on. For two or more, I'd at least go for the W models.

Do they last a long time? Do they need rebuilt often? I am looking in to them and the Tunze pumps. I think I like the slim look of the MP 40s, but I have been told that the Tunze pumps will last for ever.

heres my limited exp with them. i have 2 mp40w (middle version). they have outstanding flow in my 90, between that and my return i can make a hurricane in there if i wanted. mine however are noisy. i see lots of people saying theres are dead silent. i cannot get mine to do that though (still playing around). like was stated above, get what you can find the best deal on and go wireless if you get more then 1

If they are noisy, they are either worn or misaligned. Mine make a VERY slight whirr... if there is anything on in the house you can't hear it, even when they ramp up.

Wear is pretty much the wetside bearings, which aren't that hard to replace. Mine were bought used and are going on a year and a half with me, and still going strong (with only a couple of cleanings).

i wont hijack his thread discussing my noise issues but yes im fairly sure its the wetside but i have much louder equipment to quiet down before i work on the pumps.

Different sizes (40/60 etc) will communicate with each other. You CAN mix generations, but you end up with the functionality of the older one... for example, a W and a W-ES will work just like two W's, but the EcoSmart modes will be unavailable to you. Unless of course you don't link them but run them independently, in which case they all do what they normally do. The EcoSmart modes are meant for at least two, preferably more, pumps together. Nutrient export is ideally suited for one on each end and one on the back. (This info from others; I have W models so I can't vouch for how effective these modes are... but others seem to love them).

Only wireless models (W, W-ES) will work with the Apex VXM module. It acts as the master and all of the pumps are slaves to it.

A couple of other plusses of the W-ES are the leds that let you know the percent speed they are running at, the time left in feed mode, and a power off button.
