Mushroom splitting?

Is this mushroom splitting? Do they split because they are healthy or because they are trying to preserve life?

One of mine just split . It looked crazy for a few weeks beforehand.

It's definitely splitting. Its a rhodactis. They split for both reasons you listed. It is a little small to split but it looks otherwise quite healthy... So I assume its because it has accumulated enough strength to split.

It's a word now, lol. I'm pretty sure all mushrooms are frag-able. The Madison splits tend to have better bubbles from what I've read.
