I got into saltwater in Oct 2014 (after many years of being satisfied with freshwater) and I'm finally getting around to doing my first tank thread. I've enjoyed looking at other people's tanks on ARC and felt I should probably post mine too, even if I don't think it's up to par with all the really nice tanks I see. I know I still have a lot to learn, but I've been happy with what I've done so far.

My very first saltwater tank was a little 2.2 with a single peppermint shrimp and a couple softies, but I quickly replaced it with a JBJ 24, then got a 80 rimless in Dec 2014, followed shortly after by a nuvo 10 to keep on the dresser beside my bed. I've come to really fall in love with shallow, rimless tanks, so when I saw the Deep Blue 34 rimless, I couldn't stop thinking about it (it's like a mini me version of the 80).

Well, the plan is that I will be taking down the JBJ 24 and moving it's contents (a toby puffer, green spotted puffer, filefish, and 2 big RBTAs) into the 34 along with some corals from the 80. But before that, I'm planning on doing a reaquascaping and "fish reboot" on the 80... and I will use the empty 34 as a temporary holding tank. Taking rock out of the 80 will allow me to finally catch fish that have evaded my net, plus, I haven't been completely happy with the tank cause the "aquascape" is kind of a mess. I intend on trying to be more disciplined in how I place rocks and corals.

The 80 has 3 yellow tangs (3-4inch), 2 pajamas, and 2 ocellaris clowns. I like the clowns, but will be selling the others. I came to realize it was a mistake putting the 3 yellow tangs in together because of the frequent territorial bickering (though they rarely cause any damage from what I see), and the fact that they beat up a blue throat trigger and a copper banded butterfly I tried to put in. I'm on the fence about whether I want to add any other tang later. And the pajamas.. I want to get rid of them cause I think they're kinda ugly, they eat too much, and like stealing food from corals (I often see them systematically swimming from coral to coral checking for food). I only got the pajamas in first place because I read they were a good beginner fish, and they were cheap. This time around, I want to think very carefully about what fish I put in because I now know how hard it is to catch fish in reef tanks.

Here's the equipment on the 80:

· Deep Blue 80 Rimless (48 x 24 x 16)
· 2 Radion xr30 gen 3 pros (I originally had just 2 Kessil 150's on the 80, but eventually realized I could only keep softies and some LPS. After having a couple SPS frags die, I went to the Radion's and have been happy.)
· Apex w/lab grade probe
· Reef Octopus 110 skimmer
· eheim 250w heater
· 2 Jebao RW-4's
· Rio return pump?
· 20gal sump with tank divider for refugium
· 10gal ATO with kalk (I do have 2 BRS dosing pumps and 2 part chems, but I just haven't gotten around to setting it up. Kalk in the ATO seems to be working mostly ok, though I sometimes add Seachem Reef Builder and Reef Advantage Calcium to adjust.)
· Smart ATO
· Eheim surface skimmer - don't know if anyone else uses these, but I get a good bit of dust/surface film without it.. it's always worked wonders on my freshwater planted tanks
· Hanna Alk and Cal test kits, Salifert Mag

Equipment on the 34, so far:

· Deep Blue 34 Rimless (36 x 18 x 12)
· Current USA Marine Orbit 36" (I think I might get a second one)
· Neptune Aquacontroller 3 (eventually I'll get another EB8, but I had this lying around)
· MP10
· Aqueon 300w heater
· JBJ ATO

That 80 gallon is looking VERY nice! Everything looks really healthy and happy. Definitely don't seem to be having any issues with SPS now! =)

Funny you mentioned those Eheim Skimmers. I consider those a very underrated product. And not really well known for what ever reason. I find they actually tend to work better on SW tanks because more often they are drilled and keep a more consistent water level.

Yes, the SPS are doing quite well.. I grew them from frags. What a difference lighting makes!

I think part of the reason I need the Eheim skimmer on the 80 is because I have birds in the same room, and they're pretty dusty animals, and it is an open top tank. I keep it running all the time on the 80, even though it clears the surface pretty quick. On my freshwater planted tanks, I get surface film even though there's a full glass lid, but again, turning on the skimmer clears it up quick. I agree, it is a really good product. I am curious how many people know about it.

Thanks for the compliments guys, I appreciate it! I don't feel like a pro at this reefing thing yet. I still sometimes get low alk or cal readings that send me into worry mode (even if the corals don't show any problem). And my partial color blindness keeps me from doing mag tests with any regularity (have to ask my wife to do those), so I worry about that too sometimes.

I think that once I can commit the time to test every day for a period time, get a good estimate of alk/cal/mag usage, setup the BRS dosers accordingly, and usually get perfect test readings... then maybe I'll feel like a pro

In the meantime, I'm glad things look pretty good!

I have tried to super glue GSP to the back glass, but it just falls off eventually

I do like having GSP on the ground though. To me, it's like having a nice lawn :tongue: I like doing the same thing in freshwater planted tanks with grass-like plants.

hmmm... I don't think I spend too much time on my tanks... or maybe I do :unsure:
