Ok this is going to be taking awile to setup. I have everything except the light rails. This will be for my build progress and my 1000 questions and help from you members along the way.

This is my plan...

My first question is how do i determine the auctually volume of water...gallons...and no this is not a bump bump kinda thing just trying to figure out the live rock situation...Also need some input as what you guys gals would do for the lr and ls placement and amount and what other equipment you would suggest...kalk reactor...calcium reactor etc....I have never had a large system so this is all new

chris

1. a single light over a 6' tank is no where near enough light for sps and clams. You'll need a few more halides.

2. a 40w UV is worthless on that system. You'll need to go MUCH larger. Personally, I would use ozone instead.

3. If each of the tanks are the same, then you have @370g of water volume, including the sump.

Even a 400w at about 14inches off the tank...I didn't mention that...and the tanks are only 12 inches deep but i think only 10inches will have water...I like cap bays setup where they have rubble rock under the eggcrate that is my debate now...not sure what i should do...but if i did do that that would add another3-4inches from the bottom well i mean where the corals would be...and it is on a light rail that moves back and forth at 2 feet per 20min

4. Get a VERY good skimmer.

5. Get a calcium reactor. A large, nice one. Especially for the clams and sps. This will make things a LOT easier on you.

6. You can also add a kalk/nilsen reactor to the system for increased Ca levels. It will also offset the low ph of the calcium reactor. I reccomend the nilsen with the Ca reactor, makes life easy! (but, the Ca reactor alone can do just fine).

7. every 90 deg bend in your pvc will add head pressure. Make sure you account for that.

oh, I didn't see the light rail deal.

That means that your light will span your tank in one hour; is it going to go back and forth 8-12 times per day? that's just wierd!

Why so shallow? Is this a frag setup?

If your substrate is 4" and water level is 10", then your corals can be a maximum of 6". With flow, part of them will be exposed to air when that size.

Well i am not sure what to do...put live rock in the back and just have 2inches of sand or what...yes all three are frag tanks...the light will span the length of the tank from one side to the other in one hour so in an 8 hour light peroid it will pass the tank 8 times

You don't need rock in your frag tanks. Add rock in your sump. you don't need sand in the tanks either; add it to your sump.

You'd be better off slowing down the lights. Let the corals/clams receive a more natural span of light.

And 15k bulbs are notoriously bad. Go with a 20k or reeflux 12k.

Do you think i will be able to accomidate enough lr and ls in the sump...what do you suggest lbs of ls lr...Like i said never set up a system like this before

You don't really have much choice. For a frag tank to work efficiently, you want all possible real estate available for the frags. LR only takes away from the space.

If you have a large skimmer, there won't be much room for too much rock. You may have to add a seperate sump that'll hold LR and sand. You don't need a pump for it, just plumb directly into the sump.

What skimmer are you using?

that is the plan...i have to make money to replace all the money i am spending...not really i just love taking little pieces and making a colony and selling knowing that the reef isn't being torn up...kinda of mushy for a marine i know but i have a thing for animals creatures etc...and SKIRTZ my skimmer sits on top of the sump it is not in it...kind of a cool design

My skimmer is a dual 1inch beckett mod (2 becketts) with gate vavle mod it appears to be the same size as a aqua ev-400

If it were me, I'd plumb in another large sump for LR (and possibly a remote sand bed although not sure that's really needed for this setup). Leave the tanks as open as possible for the frags. This also makes it much easier to maintain the tanks.

not sure how well this would work in a grow out situation. If you can slow down the cycle, I would think that would help. If not, you might also want to consider extending the time period. Not sure you'll get the exposure to all areas of the tank that you'll need with an 8 hour cycle.

Ok the first two pics are of the 6ft like isolation statins that connect from one overflow to the other on each tank
the next two are my skimmer
and the last three are how my sump is set up or how it is now don't know if i am goin to change it up yet
