I'm finally getting around to piecing together my build. I had a custom tank and stand built. The tank was built by using starphire glass by glass cages and it's built like, well, a tank. It's heavy and overall the build quality is very good. Dave Kimbrell built the stand for me. I wanted an Elos, modern style appearance. He used a commercial grade laminated plywood. I plan to get the aqua scape completed in the next few weeks using a combination on marco rock. I bought branch rock and premium cuts so that they will sit flush with the bottom of the tank. I do plan to put sand in this one.

I'm going to hang my new fixture from the ceiling. The only problem is I have 30' ceilings in the room that it's in. I plan to use a cardboard template to make sure that I get the holes in the right place. A 1/16" difference would be a pretty big difference after traveling 30' of cable, right? Any suggestions to make sure the fixture doesn't come out of square?

sorry this doesn't answer your question, but a really nice plant fixture off the wall above the tank a few feet to hang your light fixture?

Nah. That's what I had before and really want the clean look of the cables only.

Id use a laser level although you might not have access to one and I was looking the other day and couldn't find one that did a vertical beam for under $100, keep in mind also that over 30' I doubt your walls are perfectly square or level so that would throw off measurements.

Place the light on something so it sits over the tank where you want it (hopefully centered). I like to use a 2x4. Then drop a plumb line from the ceiling to the anchor point on the light. It worked for my setup. Laser would work but I trust gravity over technology.

+1 great idea, I haven't used one in years so that didn't even cross my mind :)

FYI Ryobi makes a nice cheap one that does horizontal, vertical or both at the same time. It also has a vacuum pump to stick it to a flat surface. If I rememberred correctly I paid like $25 a couple years ago for the one I have. Worth every penny.
