My tunze skimmer has been running in my sump for a few weeks. now, it's suddenly acting up. right when i plug it in, it foams up real fast and fills the cup with water in a few minutes.

The only thing i can think of it that i may have too much water in the sump. also, i just started dosing more on calcium/alk.

any idea what is wrong?

Mine's never done that, but it has always had clear skim. I would think it's too low in the sump. Try raising it and see what happens.

Which model of Tunze skimmer do you have? If it's one of the box skimmers 9005/9010...I would guess you need to close down the air valve, or something got added to the water that is causing the skimmer to act up. Have you added any epoxy or meds lately?

Jeff

hmmmmm. would raising it be the same as just letting the water level lower in the sump?

do u set the water line to the "water line" on the skimmer? or do u have it lower?

Edit:

i have the Tunze DOC 9005. yes, i did add a few piece of epoxy and even super glue to add a couple of frags. Just a little though (two frags). could that have done it?

and if so, what needs to be done to fix it?

(i have tried turning the screw to loosen and tighten it. but it didn't help)

adjust the "air inlet" set screw that jeffH was talking about...

less air..

i've adjusted the inlet. as tight as i can, but it didn't help.

i didn't take it apart yet. but the pump is set inside the tunze so i doubt that happened. but i will check.

i'm thinking that i need to lower the water line in the sump. what do yall think?

If it just all of a sudden started acting up, I'd bet something you added to the tank is causing the reaction. Give it a day and see if it settles down. When I used my 9010, I'd always keep the water level just a little lower then the blue line..only adjust the air on these skimmers. I wouldn't mess with the water level.

yea, i have started dosing more lately. and i added some epoxy and super glue to put a couple frags in. that's all i can think of. oh, and i added lots and lots and lots of cash to the tank!

if water is getting into the intake hole where the air normally goes it will do this...basically the water is too high

thanks. I think the water is too high too. But it was working before. the only thing that confuses me is that my tunze has a water line bar where i have put the water in the sump at. seems high to me, but it's at the water line bar.

I always ran mine about a 1/4" below the blue water line. It might seem high compared to other skimmers, but that is the way Tunze has designed it.

if you tighten the screw all the way down (no air)..

there shouldn't be any way for bubbles to be created...
