Need pump suggestions.

For a 180 gallon reef tank. Internal or External will be fine.

All plumbing will be contained in the stand, no lines through the walls.

I need 1000 gph through tank
I need 480-1920 through chiller (JBJ Arctica 1/4 hp)

Total pipe length is 20 feet

I looked at water blasters. There is not enough head pressure with them.

What to use?

I am looking at the reeflo dart pump. Numbers are good. What are the short term, long term negative effects on gating this style pump back incase it is too much power?

I just got a Snapper/Dart Hybrid from Marine Designs (MD). My old Dolphin 1200 died after about 12 years of continuous operation. I took the opportunity to upgrade my water flow. I have a 150g (5'x2'x2') tank and everything is under my tank. I would say that the pump fills my needs and then some.

It doesn't make any more noise than my Ehiem 1262 that I am using on my Euro Reef skimmer. Quiet. Love it.

I have two schedule 80 true union ball valves (and other fittings) on the return lines that I am using to throttle back the output. After my coral and fish get used to the great increase in water flow, I will probably open it up fully.

I sent a question to the tech support of one of the online supply sites that carries that pump (before I ordered my pump from MD) and asked about the impact of throttling back the output. The response was it was ok to do it and it would in fact reduce the wattage consumption of the pump. But I wouldn't make it a drastic reduction.

Mph84 has 2 blueline hd70 external pumps for sale both brand new pressure rated looked at flow curve at 20ft head looks like about 1200gph flow 1750gph at 0 head

Don't have much to compare too but I can't imagine anything better than my QuietOne. Forget which on it is off the top of my head but it is rated at 1650 gal/hr. love it. Quiet as a church mouse.

I have decided on the Reeflo dart. I can use the extra volume for a future 60 gallon cube I might use as a frag tank in a couple years. Planning ahead while benefitting now.

As an interim configuration, you can add a "T" between your check valve and any spit return to your tank. That way you can bleed off some of the flow into your sump/refugium while not having to drastically restrict the flow to your tank.

Teeing off back to the sump is a waste of electricity IMO

This is a good choice for your specs. No negatives with some valvedown. Reduced power usage (watts).
